A type of flatbread that is often stuffed with vegetables or meat and served with curries or chutneys. Here's a simple recipe for plain parathas:
Ingredients:
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp oil
- 3/4 cup water
- 2 tbsp ghee or butter (for cooking)
Instructions:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt.
- Add the oil and mix well. Gradually add water and knead the dough until it is smooth and elastic. Cover the dough and let it rest for 10-15 minutes.
- Divide the dough into small portions and roll each portion into a ball.
- Dust the work surface and rolling pin with some flour. Flatten one of the balls and roll it out into a thin circle (about 6-7 inches in diameter).
- Spread 1/4 tsp of ghee or butter on top of the rolled-out dough. Fold the dough in half and spread another 1/4 tsp of ghee or butter on top of it.
- Fold the dough in half again to form a triangle shape. Roll the dough out into a slightly thicker circle (about 7-8 inches in diameter).
- Heat a griddle or tawa over medium-high heat. Place the rolled-out dough on the griddle and cook for about 30 seconds on each side or until lightly browned.
- Spread some ghee or butter on both sides of the paratha while cooking. Repeat the process with the remaining dough portions.
- Serve hot with your favorite curry or yogurt.
Note:
You can also add fillings such as mashed potatoes,
paneer, or onions to the paratha before cooking. Simply place the filling in
the center of the rolled-out dough and fold the dough over it before rolling it
out again.
